Announced at E3 2013 Fable legends was being developed by lionhead studios was an online 4 player co-op game exclusive to the Xbox one, later promised for window machines. The game was focused on an asymmetrical multiplayer experience with four-players controlling legends. A player-controlled villain That could control AI enemy’s place traps and etc. they later announced that it would be free to play game. Looking at the games subreddit r/FableLegendsGame, it’s pretty dead which makes sense since the servers were closed April 13th, 2016.
When the game was alive and in development, they announced multiply different legends. It seems like there would be a whole cast of legends with an ever-rotating free selection. With this being a free-to-play game it featured microtransactions for in-game currency, allowing you to buy legends to use whenever wanted. Gameplay videos can be found on YouTube easily, it seems like your standard third-person action RPG. Like most asymmetrical games, the balancing between the team of legends and the villain. Back to the subreddit on an archived post by u/gr33ngiant, he offers some thoughts stating. The melee combat feels lackluster, some hero’s are underwhelming, lack of tooltip for skills, and that the villain role was fun to play.
Another problem that plagued the game was the studio itself, according to Eurogamer, “nobody” wanted to work on it at lion head. They would have preferred to have worked on making Fable 4 instead. But with Microsoft, their parent company footing the 75 Million Dollar bill on the game, not much choice really. Then came the delays, internally at this point lionhead knew the game was lackluster at best. The public also knew Microsoft noticing the lack of interest in the game and an open beta on the horizon. Microsoft pulled the plug not only on the game but the studio it self closing that as well.
Overall the game was just boring lacking an open world like previous fable titles, running missions the core gameplay loop got boring to players. Overall it was just lackluster along with the balance issues of the legends and the villain. Made it a slog to play. With the villain role being fun to play at least the main problem was the balance of it all. It was a slaughter of the villain or the hero’s unless both sides were experienced in the role. All this talk of balance you would be excused from thinking that with some balance fixes it could be cool. But it’s not just some balance fixes buffing one legend could destroy the villains’ balance, so buff the villain now the villain is too powerful and steamrolls the legends. Till you nerf and buff in nauseum.
