My Fav games from Steam Nextfest

yes i know Next Fest started the 13th I forgot.

Winnies Hole (Demo)

Winnie the pooh has some intense stomach problems, it’s part tetris, part horrible mutating virus. Using virus Tetris blocks you activate abilities and explore Winnie’s stomach which double as your map where you choose what rewards you get at the end of combat along with a peek at the enemies of that combat. The moment to moment gameplay of the game is 60% tetris block puzzle rotating shapes 20% Deck builder 20% combat puzzler. But instead of drawing a hand from a deck of cards your abilities are placed in Winnies head. Using your Tetris shaped virus squares to activate and ideally combo multiple abilities together defeat enemies. standard rogue-like affair of ability upgrades, mutations, key word adders like penetration, reach blah blah to your abilities. but also your own Tetris block of course can be upgraded in a sense like adding a square to the shape. Theirs also ones that make it when you place your Tetris block they can grow outward in random direction activating abilities you may not have wanted activated. During all this you’re watching Winnie walking and slowly mutating as you upgrade your self gaining tentacles, eyes, limbs, growths of all kinds really. along with the other residents of the 1000 acre woods growing to fear you and defend them selves from you ever mutating hunger.

I highly recommend giving it a go if you like games like Slay the spire, darkest dungeon/Deck building rogue-likes.

LORT(Demo)

Do you like Risk of Rain 2? If yes this is that but a fantasy version. The loop is mostly the same defeat enemies for gold, open chests scattered about for items that stack near infinitely until you become well a GOD of destruction really. What LORT adds/changes to this loop are dope the biggest change is that runs are set on a MUCH bigger map and enemies don’t swarm you. Enemies instead are either summoned by at statues which the game calls trials where you get extra gold for or they are hanging out at a camp of some kind. Which leads to the other upgrades you can get which are your attributes. Upgrades to your attributes strength(hit hard),stamina(hit faster),Intelligence(cooldowns are faster) are at camps some have one of these attributes to pick up and upgrade larger ones force to pick which attribute to upgrade. This leads to this early run decision making of which attribute do you want to pick up first or do you just focus farming gold to get items. Runs are separated into quests to with different overall objectives from complete X number of objectives to hunt and kill this boss enemy. There is also your pretty standard meta progression in the form of Runes that you collect on runs and keep on death, used purchase X% upgrades for damage, health, or start with X amount cash, to healing charges.

It scratches the same itch as RoR2, or Muck but adds new ways to get that God run that feel so good. So if you like those kinds of games this adds enough new to that formula to warrant a look at the very least.

Dobble Dungeon(Demo)

As horrible as it was to watch Winnie the Pooh slowly mutate into an abomination, Dobble Dungeon is the opposite. It’s an adorable and expressive game with its Claymation art style and fun animations which ultimately leads to a warm cozy feeling for the whole game. It’s a dice based tactical RPG meaning you roll your dice at the start of your turn and you use those for abilities. Their is no percentage chance to hit or miss on abilities just if you have the dice for the ability/attack. Meaning some abilities require two dice to use or it might require an odd number dice. There are also items that can add or take away from your pool of dice or mess with the numbers on the die. Ultimately so you can do more in a turn and increase the chances of having the dice needed for an ability. It’s a party based RPG, in the demo you have a paladin, pyromancer, and a druid and they’re all learning together apparently. all the skill points earned as rewards for fights are finite and not per character so lets say you get 3 skill points as a reward. You now have a choice do you either dump them all into one character or spread them out between the party members. The fights and mission types has variety atleast a little I’m sure there are more in full game. But the demo has three pretty standard ones protect the civilian, escort the merchant, and standard wave based ones.

Honestly I’m not the greatest at or have the most experience with tactical RPGs so I was hesitant to try this demo. But the cute art style got me to give it a try and I’m happy I did. Highly recommend if you like other tactical RPGs you will probably wish it had more difficulty and maybe depth. But it brings a cute as hell art style and animations that leads to a more approachable tactical RPG. If you don’t like tactical RPGs give it a try look at the cute characters close the game.
